QUEENSHIP OF MARY AND THE AMERICAS

"AMERICA WILL BE SAFE, IF …"

The special symbol of the Queenship of Mary for all the Americas and for the Philippines is the miraculous image in Mexico City where Our Lady appeared as described in the Apocalypse, clothed with the sun, standing on the moon.

It was solemnly crowned by a legate of Pope Leo XIII as "Empress and Queen of the Americas and of the Philippines" in 1945.

Fifty years later, on the occasion of the GOLDEN JUBILEE of his coronation, Pope Pius XII made an extraordinary statement. It seemed even more than a prophecy. His Holiness said:

"I am certain that, as long as you are RECOGNIZED AS QUEEN and Mother, Mexico and America will be safe."

THINKING OF A BOMB?

Just two months before this statement the first atomic bombs had brought an end to World War II. The world was shocked and frightened. With the awesome power man had now unleashed, one or two nations could destroy entire cities, perhaps even nations.

It was at this moment that the Holy Father made this remarkable statement concerning the future of America.

Less than 10 years later, this same Pope issued the encyclical instituting the Feast of the Queenship of Mary (Aug. 22^nd) in which he said:

"In this doctrine and devotion of Mary's Queenship lies the world's greatest hope."

IMPORTANCE OF VIGILS

Francis Johnston, in a book written shortly before his death, said the miraculous image given by Our Lady to the Americas may have been intended as a "tangible pledge of hope in order to sustain us during the worldwide rationalist revolt against God which has arisen over the past few centuries and is now reaching its terrible climax."

He continues: "The darkest hour will inevitably melt away in the radiant dawn of Our Lady's triumph over the serpent. A tiny minority are fulfilling the crucial Fatima Message of 1917 and, through unswerving prayer and personal sacrifice… such as All-Night Vigils of reparation… striving to redress the fearful imbalance created by so much deliberate evil."

Francis Johnston, an Englishman, was dying of cancer when he wrote this. He went as far as to say that there seemed some predestined purpose for the Americas (and the Philippines) not only because of the apparition and miracle of Guadalupe but because "of the continuing miracle of the preservation of that miraculous image up to the present moment" despite bombs, acid, millions of hands rubbed against it.

COULD BE YOU

As the attention of apostolates of suffering around the world will focus on Guadalupe this February 11^th, let those of us who do not have sufferings to offer at least give our Mother and Queen a night of adoring Her Divine Son each first Friday-Saturday as many thousands in America and the Philippines are already doing.

The very next person to join the vigils may be the last of the sufficient number needed! Will it be you?
