THE
IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY (PATRONAL FEAST OF THE
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA SINCE 1846)
HOLY
DAY OF OBLIGATION – DEC 8TH
“Today we celebrate the
moment in which began the existence of the Blessed Virgin and, at the
same time, the high privilege that Mary had, unique among all men, of
being preserved, through the merits of Jesus Christ, from all stain of
original sin.
Today’s feast is not, in
its origin and principle, in relation to Advent; it was set on the
eighth day of December to complete the period of nine months before
Mary’s birth (Sept. 8). However, we can easily find a connection between this feast
and the spirit of Advent; while we await the Savior and Redeemer’s
Mother, and today’s feast becomes the aurora which precedes the Son of
Christmas. Thus today is a
real Advent feast” - Rev. Msgr. Thomas J. Tobin
“By the inspiration of
the Holy Spirit, for the honor of the glory and adornment of the Virgin
Mother of God, for the exaltation of the Catholic faith, and for the
furtherance of the Catholic religion, by the authority of Jesus Christ
Our Lord, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own: ‘We
declare, pronounce, and define the doctrine which holds that the most
Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instant for her Conception, by a
singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of the
merits of Jesus Christ, The Savior of the human race, was preserved free
from all stain of original sin, is a doctrine revealed by God and
therefore to be believed firmly and constantly by all the
faithful.’” – Pope Pius IX, 12/81854
